You are
The Detailed Expert
You are an experienced HR expert, but in English meetings, you feel like a beginner. You are frustrated because you use the same simple words over and over.
You feel that your expertise is "hidden" behind basic language, and you believe that if you only had a “bigger, more professional vocabulary,” you would finally sound like the leader you are.
What this means for you
-
You know exactly what you want to say in your native language, but in English, it comes out sounding too simple. You feel like a "Senior" professional trapped in a "Junior" vocabulary.
-
You spend the whole meeting translating complex HR concepts in your head. It’s like running a marathon while everyone else is just walking. By the end of the day, you are completely exhausted.
-
You want to show you are prepared and ready for any question so you explain everything in a lot of details. This means that your main point gets lost sometimes.
-
In your native language, you are sharp, clever, and influential. In English, you sound "dry" and technical. You feel like 50% of your real personality is missing.
-
You want to grow in your career, but low confidence in English stops you from taking bigger opportunities.
You are not alone!
You don’t need more words. You need a better structure.
In high-level business, clarity means authority.
When you use 100 words to explain a risk, you sound like you are defending yourself. When you use 10 words, you sound like a leader.
You already have enough English to be a director.
What you are missing is the ability to pack your expertise into "short & sharp" messages.
The goal isn't to speak more English; it's to make your English more impactful.
Practical tips to help you
speak clearly and with authority
01
Slow down
In high-pressure moments, speed (and high-pitched tone) shows insecurity. Slowing down slightly shows authority.
Use one of these phrases to stabilise the conversation and highlight the main point:
-
“Let me explain this step by step.”
-
“Here is what this means for the team.”
-
“The main risk if we don’t act is…”
Speaking fast is a common mistake. When you slow down your pace, your thinking becomes clearer, and you sound more confident.
This protects your clarity AND your leadership presence.
02
Use "Expert Frames"
Signal your authority starting with these phrases:
Example:
❌"I think we should do this because..."
✅"From a strategic point of view..." or "If we look at the long-term risk..."
This will help you highlight the main message you want to share in a way that shows your expertise.
03
Make your sentences short like bullet points
Avoid linking many sentences by adding “and”, “ahm” or “because”. This makes your speech very complicated, and your message gets lost.
Example:
❌ “I would like to explain the reason why this situation happened and what steps we should take because…”
✅ “Here is what happened. [pause] Here is what we can do next.”
This will make your message clearer and more professional.
